Melanie Hazlett, Ph.D., P.Eng.Assistant ProfessorEducation
Dr. Melanie Hazlett received her B.A.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston. During her studies at the University of Waterloo, worked in academic laboratories and industrial settings through UW's co-operative education program. As a three time awardee of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Award, twice in an academic laboratory at UW and once in an industrial lab at Xerox Research Centre Canada, she was able to explore the differences in industrial and academic research and development. She was inspired by her undergraduate academic research and went on to pursue her Ph.D. studies at the University of Houston under the supervision of Dr. William Epling. At UH, research work focused on understanding Pt-Pd/Al2O3 oxidation catalysts for reducing diesel engine carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions by evaluating reaction mechanisms and performance on catalyst with varying Pt:Pd ratios. Since her Ph.D., Dr. Hazlett has completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Calgary, researching the conversion of petroleum coke from the Alberta oil sands to a catalytic material by introducing surface functional groups. Dr. Hazlett has published eleven peer reviewed publications, including a book chapter and a review article. Her most cited paper, “Kinetic and Mechanistic Study of Bimetallic Pt-Pd/Al2O3 Catalysts for CO and C3H6 Oxidation”, has already received over 115 citations since publication in 2017 and was completed during her PhD at the University in collaboration with scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Her review paper, “Heterogeneous Catalyst Design: Zoned and Layered Catalysts in Diesel Vehicle After-treatment Monolith Reactors”, was acknowledged as one of the most downloaded articles from the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering in 2018-2019. |
Azam MovasatiPhD StudentEducation:
2017: M.Sc. Chemical Engineering, Iran University of Science and Technology, Iran 2013: B.Sc. Chemical Engineering, Sahand University of Technology, Iran About Azam: Azam is a Chemical Engineering PhD student at Concordia University, starting summer 2021. She achieved her Master's degree from IUST and during her studies, she worked in an academic laboratory. Her main focus was on the synthesis of new nanocatalysts for hydrogen production, which is a completely environmentally friendly process. She developed Ni nanocatalysts supported over ZnAl2O4 for the first time for this reaction and could publish two ISI papers in high-impact journals. Being in this situation made her proficient in working with (gas chromatography) GC and catalyst reaction set-ups as well as characterization tests. After graduation, her interest led her to continually update her theoretical knowledge and expertise regarding state-of-the-art topics, especially in various fields. For instance, CO2 capture, simulations as well as energy and exergy and she published another ISI paper. Publications:

Education:
2014: M.Sc. Chemical Engineering, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology, Iran 2009: B.Sc. Chemical Engineering, Islamic Azad University About Azita: Azita is a Chemical Engineering PhD student at Concordia University, starting summer/fall 2022. She achieved her Master's degree from Babol Noshirvani University of Technology. She worked on Hydrogen Production via Glycerol Reforming over Platinum Nanocatalysts in a Spiral-Shaped Microchannel Reactor which gives her technical experience in the design of microchannel reactors. Her master’s research is very novel, as this was the first time a microchannel reactor was used in glycerol reforming. During her master’s study, she led laboratory and problem-solving sessions for undergraduate students. She was also a lecturer and taught Chemistry courses to undergraduates. In her spare time, she likes to draw, read crime novels, go hiking and hangout with her friends. Publications:
